The #WildEdge Tech Revolution
I've been involved in a project to protect #wildlife for some time now by using low power consumption, smart and connected edge devices. While doing so I realized the need for information regarding the use of technology to protect Nature. WildEdge, this site, is maintained to accomplish that goal, to share knowledge, use cases and of course information about my main project Big Cat Brother. The center of this work are the Jaguars or Yaguaretés as we call them here, They are silently facing an extinction crisis here in Argentina, for that reason, you will find information about them.
The more you get into the subject the more you realize how bad things are regarding our natural environment and its #biodiversity. We are part of the natural world and if the natural world has a problem then we all have a problem. My focus and efforts are on protecting Yaguaretés, at first it was a matter of affinity toward them, after some time I came to realize how important top predators are for maintaining the balance in an ecosystem, and as you probably know, everything is connected to everything. What happens in Africa doesn't stay in Africa.
I learnt many things during this time, one thing is that these problems can be addressed by different approaches, from creating social opportunities around wildlife (I strongly recommend you to see the amazing work of Tompkins Conservation and Rewilding Argentina, see the Links) to enforce controls and apply technology to keep track of relevant events. Big Cat Brother, my main project, is an example of the last one.
Our constant need for expansion and resources confined Wild Life to relatively small, remote and hard to penetrate places. That means that technology based solutions have to deal with very extreme operational conditions; those constraints are typically the lack of energy sources, communication infrastructure and autonomy. This is what I mean by wild edge tech. Why do I say it is a Revolution ? Well, It will be a revolution because powerful and low power consumption computing is evolving pretty fast and I bet you will see lots of smarts devices everywhere soon. The enablers are there, now decisions is what is needed.
Another thing I learnt on my way is that the problems to be addressed are endless and this is why I came to create this site. I wanted to share my findings and progress with you to encourage the use of cutting edge computing to address some of the problems you might feel related to and also to tell you about other initiations or projects being happening right now.
What you will find in this site is:
Information about Jaguars.
Information about the technology being used to develop the devices that compose BCB.
Information about other use cases using edge computing to solve nature related problems.
Please, check the Motivations and Values section but rest assured that the content of this site is not being influenced by any company nor organization, all the information you will find here is my pure criteria for choosing what I think is the best option to achieve my aims. I hope you will find your own ways to achieve yours, it is a time for a change and to rewild ourselves a little bit.
